The Power of Vulnerability TED Talk
In her 2010 TEDxHouston talk Brené Brown points out that we need to teach learners to go to bed at night thinking, “Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.” Brené gives the audience insight from her research about love, belonging, and connection. Values – Optimism The values.com site has some great resources worth exploring. We especially love the list of video clips that demonstrate different traits. The video “The Greatest” on optimism is perfect for any age group. Teachers can use it as a journal prompt to introduce resiliency. Stanford’s Resilience Project for High School Students Stanford University’s Resilience Project has a wonderful video library of personal stories and presentations that focus on real life resiliency lessons from brave people willing to share their reflections. The goal of the project is to help change the perception that failure from something that is to be avoided to something that has meaning, purpose, and value. The stories themselves would be an added resource to any classroom. But an even better step would be to use the stories as inspiration for a school or classroom to create their own “Resilience Project”. The Good Samaritan Activity The Samaritans site has many resources worthy of educator’s attention. We love the building resilience activity they have provided as part of the extensive DEAL (Developing Emotional Awareness and Listening) resources aimed at students 14 years and older. The resilience activity focuses on examining the coping strategies people use. Don’t Worry, Bee Happy Newsela has a collection of nonfiction articles teachers can scale to different Lexile levels. This article is about the emotional state of bees. Learning about the feelings of bees can help students gain new perspectives on emotions and the impact they have on our physiological state.
